A steel angle is another type of structural support. It features an L-shape design with a 90-degree angle. Steel angles are commonly used for framing, bracing, and corner reinforcement.

Can you use aluminum flashing with pressure-treated lumber?

It is not recommended. Most pressure-treated lumber contains copper-based preservatives which can cause aluminum, zinc, and galvanized steel to discolour and corrode. Flashing tape and a flexible membrane inserted between the wood and aluminum will offer some protection. You can also safely opt for copper or stainless-steel flashing, or use a different type of wood such as pine, spruce, or fir.

How do I cut square metal tubing?

For structural metal tubing you’ll need something stronger than a pipe cutter or hack saw. A reciprocating saw can cut through aluminum or steel, but it requires a steady hand to achieve a perfectly straight cut. Your best option might be an angle grinder. It’s easier to get a straight cut, and you can also use it for deburring and smoothing out the edges.

What is a threaded rod?

A threaded rod is a type of long fastener that can be used in applications where a bolt is too short. It features full threading from end-to-end, unlike a bolt that has a head at one end. Threaded rods are sold in various sizes ranging from one to six feet long. This gives you a working stock that can then be cut to your desired length.
