Spring Weekend DIY: Birdhouses for Garden and Front Door Style
By BeautiTone
Spring has a way of inviting us back outdoors. Opening windows, refreshing our spaces, and reconnecting with nature in simple, meaningful ways. As the season unfolds, it’s the perfect time to rethink familiar garden elements and transform them into something both practical and beautiful. One unexpected and charming way to do this is by reimagining birdhouses, not just as homes for birds, but as creative features for herbs, flowers, and seasonal décor.
With a little imagination, birdhouses can become a vertical herb garden for your patio, a fresh floral centrepiece, or a welcoming accent at your front door. Whether you’re working with a small outdoor space or a sprawling yard, this project brings together craftsmanship, gardening, and the quiet joy of spring.
Birdhouses with a Twist
Birdhouses are often associated with function, but they also offer endless decorative potential. For this project, think of birdhouses as small architectural structures. Each one customizable to suit your style, colour palette, and space.
Start by making or sourcing birdhouses that suit your aesthetic. They can be rustic, modern, playful, or traditional. Use untreated wood where possible, especially if you plan to plant herbs or flowers inside. Once you have your birdhouses, the transformation begins.

Optional Shingles for Added Character
For those who enjoy detail work, adding shingles to the roof can elevate the look and give each birdhouse a handcrafted feel.
To make shingles, start with 1” x 8” pine blanks cut into 2” lengths. Set a compound mitre saw at 3 degrees and cut thin wedge slices across the 2” width. Turn the blank over after each cut to create tapered shingles with a natural, layered appearance.
A quick safety note: when the board becomes shorter than 3” or 4” in length, discard it and start a new blank to keep your hands safely away from the blade.
Attach the shingles to the roof using hot glue, working from the bottom edge upward so they overlap naturally. Once complete, treat the shingles with a Terra Nova NaturOil to protect the wood while keeping it safe for plants and pollinators.

A Fresh Floral Centrepiece for Spring
Birdhouse planters also make striking seasonal centrepieces. For a patio table, outdoor dining area, or even indoors near a sunny window, fill the roof opening with fresh flowers, moss, or spring bulbs.
Think tulips, pansies, violas, or trailing ivy for early spring. As the season progresses, you can swap arrangements to reflect what’s blooming locally. Using floral foam or small pots inside the birdhouse makes it easy to change displays without disturbing the structure.
Grouped together, birdhouse centrepieces create a layered, collected look that feels relaxed and welcoming, perfect for spring gatherings or quiet afternoons outdoors.

Bringing It All Together
What makes this project truly special is its versatility. Birdhouses can feel playful or refined, rustic or polished, depending on how they are finished and what is planted inside. They balance beauty and function in an effortless way, becoming pieces that are both decorative and useful.
By transforming birdhouses into herb gardens, floral centrepieces, or front door accents, you are doing more than decorating for spring. You are creating small moments of connection with nature. These simple structures become living reminders of the season’s arrival, celebrating growth, renewal, and the satisfaction that comes from making something by hand.
As spring settles in, let birdhouses take on new life in your space. Whether placed on a patio, styled as a tabletop accent, or hung at the front door, they offer a fresh and welcoming way to greet the season, one herb, flower, and thoughtful detail at a time. This birdhouse was painted in BeautiTone’s Andes Sky C13-4-0680-0 then softly white-washed with Whipped WB048-1 to create a gently aged, time-worn effect.
White-wash tip: To achieve a soft, aged finish, dilute white paint with water and brush lightly over the surface, wiping back with a cloth to let the base colour show through.
Spring is the perfect time to create spaces that feel lighter, brighter, and more welcoming. By rethinking classic garden elements and adding your own colour and creativity, you can shape an environment that feels intentional and personal. It is a simple way to celebrate the season and make your outdoor spaces feel truly your own.
