Growing a successful garden requires good soil, but you also need the right type of soil. Indoor gardens require potting soil, and all-purpose garden soil or topsoil works well for most flower and vegetable gardens. If you’re mixing it with your existing soil you may want some soil amendments as well. Perlite is porous and will help with soil aeration. Peat sphagnum moss will help your soil retain moisture and reduce your watering needs. It will also promote strong root development in plants. Coconut coir is an increasingly popular alternative to peat because it’s 100% sustainable and renewable. Different plants also require different soil pH levels. Adding agricultural lime will lower soil acidity and increase the pH, while sulphate aluminum will lower the pH and raise the acidity.

Organic matter provides essential nutrients to your soil, including nitrogen, phosphorous, and sulfur. Compost, cow manure, and worm castings are all great options. Mulching is also important. Choose from rubber mulch, black mulch, and red mulch to inhibit weed growth and help prevent your soil from drying out.
